Mattermost has fundamentally revised its apps for Android and iOS. The open source application for workgroups has long been able to be operated with multiple server instances – now users of the apps can easily switch between them. If desired, the servers can be assigned descriptive names, for example for different company locations. The apps always receive notifications from all servers, not just the active one.

In addition, there is now a central quick access bar at the bottom of the applications – like the competitor Microsoft Teams. Home summarizes all important elements such as direct messages, favorites or channels including notifications. The search trawls through Mattermost – now including the files – and can be configured using filters. Mentions provide an overview of messages addressed to the respective user. The bar also provides bookmarks, and last but not least direct access to your own profile.

Finally, the developers have given the apps gestures: they generally correspond to those of the competition so that users can use them intuitively. Those who obtain the mobile applications from the Play Store or App Store should receive the update immediately. Those who prefer to make them available to their users themselves will find it in the announcement Instructions for this along with the server requirements.

The Mattermost apps are licensed under the Apache 2.0 license, and the server also appears as open source software. Companies can operate the complete package themselves with or without support, alternatively the developers offer a cloud version. However, some features for enterprise use are paid add-ons in both cases. However, unlike Microsoft’s Teams Premium plans, these are backend features for larger installations.
