Measures continue to combat fare evasion

The MTA continues its efforts to make the job more difficult for fare evaders. Their latest attempt is a barrier that they have named “fin.”

These are metal plates installed on the sides of the turnstile in order to prevent the person from having something to lean on to jump over it.

There are four stations that now have “fins” and the authority says that evasion has decreased by 20 percent.

In the coming months, another ten stations will have this barrier.

Likewise, MTA Chairman Janno Lieber said at the board meeting that the agency is hiring 471 private security officers to stand near the exits of 50 stations.

Lieber also said the MTA estimates it will lose up to $800 million this year from fare evasion on subways and buses, about the same amount the agency lost in 2022.

And when it comes to emergency exits, the MTA will try to eliminate the need for them, in the meantime they plan to expand the pilot program that delays door opening by 15 seconds.

These gates are installed at three stations and have resulted in a 38 percent decrease in escapes.

The agency says it will improve the design and sensors and that at least 15 new stations will have this pilot program before the end of the year.
