The arrival of the Three Wise Men marks the end of the gift season, so scammers and cybercriminals take advantage of the fact that many people make last-minute purchases to satisfy children this January 6.

A survey by the Specialization Center for Childhood Psychological Studies found that nine out of ten children between the ages of 10 and 14 want technology-related items as gifts, such as video games, phones, smart watches and toys, cameras, drones, among others.

According to Marc Rivero, a senior security analyst at Kaspersky, creating fraudulent pages, phishing and payment scams are the most common ways to fool those looking for the latest bargain or a product sold out everywhere and that children want to receive this January 6.

Cybercriminals use the hustle and bustle of such popular dates as Three Kings Day to steal money and personal data from victims who fall for their deceptions,” he reiterated.

Given this, Rivero recommended that the Three Wise Men take various security measures so as not to fall victim to cybercriminals.

The first thing is to check the legitimacy of the online store where the gifts are going to be purchased to avoid data theft or paying for non-existent things, so the URL of the website must be verified.

Another attack method is phishing, that is, the person receives messages via email or SMS with an offer that is too good to be true.

In these cases, the expert recommended ignoring or deleting the message and, if it was opened, look closely at the sender’s email address to determine if it is false or not.
