Memphis Grizzlies retire Marc Gasol's number

MEMPHIS-. Los Grizzlies de Memphis will remove the number 33 of Marc Gasol in a pregame ceremony before the Philadelphia 76ers on April 6.

Gasol was a Memphis player from 2008 to 2019 and remains the franchise’s all-time leader in minutes played (25,917), games started (762), baskets (4,341), free throws (2,701), defensive rebounds (4,624 ), total rebounds (5,952) and blocks (1,135). He is also second in games played (769), points (11,684), assists (2,639), offensive rebounds (1,318), double-doubles (194) and triple doubles (5). He is third in steals (708).

He was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in the 2012-13 season and became the first European player with that distinction. The Spanish center was chosen to the all-NBA first team in 2014-15 and is the only player in franchise history to receive that honor. Gasol was a three-time All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 2013.

After the first game, Brent Brown, the coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, recognized that one of the keys to the game that changed in the second was the marking that first Gasol and then Ibaka did on their best man, Joel Embiid.

Gasol last played in the NBA in the 2020-21 campaign and announced his retirement this week. He spent almost his entire career in Memphis, but also played for the Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers.

Gasol becomes the second player in franchise history to have his number retired. Zach Randolph’s 50 was retired on December 11, 2021.
