The Mercedes-Maybach S580e is the brand’s first plug-in hybrid model. The automaker already offers a non-Maybach version, which debuted in 2020. The company’s plug-in hybrid will be launched in China first. Launched in Thailand, Europe, and other countries to follow.
At the heart of the plug-in hybrid is Mercedes’ 3.0-liter inline-six petrol engine. It generates 367 horsepower (270 kilowatts) and 368 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) of torque on its own. The electric motor produces 150 hp (110 kW) and 324 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque, available from the first revolution of the engine.
The electric motor and gasoline engine produce 510 horsepower (375 kilowatts) and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton-meters) of torque, the same outputs as the Mercedes-Benz S580e. Mercedes says the Maybach S580e can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). The car has a much lower top speed of 87 mph (140 km/h) in electric mode.
The Maybach comes standard with an 11-kW charger, but a 60-kW DC charger is optional. A 60-kilowatt plug can fully charge the battery in about 30 minutes. Mercedes-Maybach doesn’t reveal the size of the battery, but we do know that the Mercedes-Benz S580e features a 28.0-kWh battery pack, more than twice the size of the plug-in hybrid it replaces. The Maybach has a range of up to 62 miles (100 kilometers) based on WLTP, the same as the Mercedes version.
Maybach has carefully integrated many electric-specific features into the vehicle. The company has hidden the charger port door on the left side, while a blue accent in the headlights hints at its electrified status. Inside, Maybach added a battery charge status indicator on the dash. Mercedes-Maybach did not detail or disclose any other major changes it has made to the plug-in model. It will be packed with luxury and technology, just like the rest of the Maybach range. The company didn’t announce when it would go on sale or price, but that info should arrive before it hits showrooms.
