A terrible road accident took place this Sunday in Mexico, on a highway in the south of a border district of the United States.

A collision between a minibus and a truck has killed at least 13 people on a highway in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, local authorities announced on Sunday.

The accident occurred in the early morning on a highway linking the towns of Hidalgo and Zaragoza, in the south of this border district of the United States.

“Civil protection authorities are assisting and have so far declared 13 people dead,” the Tamaulipas security secretariat said in a statement.

The toll could rise

A source from the prosecutor’s office, who asked not to be identified, said the toll could rise as it appears the driver of the truck was traveling with his family and could have been killed too.

According to local media, the victims belonged to the same family who had rented the minibus to go from the city of Monterrey (north) to the state of Veracruz (east), and the death toll could exceed 20 dead. The prosecution said that the experts were continuing their investigations in the area of the accident.

Truck accidents have increased in recent years in Mexico due to excessive speed, poor road conditions or driver fatigue.
