Mexico City, May 11 (EFE).- Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard denounced this Thursday the racism and ignorance of US Senator John Kennedy, who stated that Mexico “would be eating cat food” without economic support from the United States .

“To me, an ignorant, racist man seems to me, he should be ashamed to be a senator, and of course we are going to defend our country in all forums, including the United States Senate,” said the Mexican foreign minister. after being questioned by the media during an event regarding Kennedy’s statements.

On Wednesday, during a session with the director of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Anne Milgram, and the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Wray, Kennedy made derogatory statements about Mexico. .

“Without the people of the United States, Mexico, figuratively speaking, would be eating cat food out of a can and living in a backyard tent,” the Republican senator said.

Given this, Ebrard assured that Kennedy is not a welcome person in Mexico and stressed that there must be respect between both nations.

“What I would tell him is that he is a persona non grata in Mexico, we do not lower ourselves to that level, we respect the United States, we are two allied countries,” he said.

Likewise, he said that Kennedy’s is a “minority” and “electoral” position of those who seek “notoriety” and public attention by offending Mexico.

However, he pointed out that this type of statement “does not offend us, it only underlines how ignorant and small it is; and he’s not going to have any success at that kind of thing because the United States needs Mexico.”

The Mexican foreign minister recalled that Mexico is the main exporter of the United States: “It is the most loyal country, the best ally it has. So, he is an ignorant and tiny man, ”he emphasized.

For his part, the head of the Foreign Ministry’s Unit for North America, Roberto Velasco, demanded respect and recognition of Mexican sovereignty by the US senator.

“Mexico is a great, dignified and sovereign country, @SenJohnKennedy. We are not anyone’s backyard. We will reject any action of interventionism and firmly demand the respect we deserve as the most important economic partner and ally of the United States, ”he wrote on his Twitter account.
