Mexico opens tent camp for migrants in Matamoros

MEXICO CITY (AP).- The Mexican government reported that a tent camp with the capacity to house some 600 migrants seeking to enter the United States was installed in the border city of Matamoros, a neighbor of Brownsville, Texas.

Mexican migration authorities detailed that the refuge camp has large tents that protect dozens of smaller tents from the sun and rain, each with capacity for three or four people.

The camp, located near the Rio Grande that marks the border between the United States and Mexico, is equipped with electrical outlets, portable toilets, and cooking facilities.

Shortly after opening, the shelter is already very close to accommodating the 600 expected occupants, many of whom have already made an appointment with the US authorities through an application to formalize their application for admission.

The place houses some 120 Venezuelans, 96 Mexicans, 88 Haitians, 66 Nicaraguans, 47 Ecuadorians and 35 Cubans, among other nationalities.
