A Microsoft shared financial results for the first quarter of 2023, where the company notes that it achieved revenue of around $52.9 billion – noting ‘breaks’ in the Windows and Xbox divisions.

With regard to Windows and devices, Microsoft reports that it had a 28% drop compared to the previous quarter, with devices having fallen by 30%.

Xbox didn’t fare any better either, with hardware revenue down 30%. It’s especially interesting to see that Microsoft has sold fewer Xbox Series units than it did a year ago, when consoles were more expensive.

Even though there was a 3% improvement in Xbox content and services, total revenue for Microsoft’s video game division was down 4%.

Note that Microsoft has also not provided any updates to Xbox Game Pass subscriber numbers, with the last update being given in January 2022 with 25 million subscribers.

Fortunately for Microsoft, the good results in the areas of Office, ‘cloud’ and servers helped to offset the losses, notes the The Verge website. Revenue from Microsoft products and ‘cloud’ services increased by 17%, with the server area having an increase of 27%.

Microsoft 365 subscribers grew by 12% and are now at 65.4 million.
