According to a survey by the IT industry association Bitkom, women are still in the minority in the ICT industry. Accordingly, the proportion of women among the IT specialists of the surveyed ICT companies is five percent. The proportion of the total workforce in ITC companies is 15 percent, a slight increase on the previous year.

Larger ITC companies with 500 or more employees fall for it Bitkom numbers after probably easier to recruit women: on average, every fourth position is occupied by women. In the case of small companies (10 to 49), the picture is different with a 14 percent share; not a single woman works in 20 percent of the small companies. According to Bitkom, more than 500 companies were surveyed.
Too few applicants
As before, significantly fewer girls and young women would aspire to an IT career with training or a degree. Accordingly, on average only one in 20 traineeships in IT jobs is occupied by a woman.
The companies definitely wished for a higher proportion of women. Around 92 percent said that mixed teams ensure a better working atmosphere and 86 percent generally see an increase in the proportion of women as an opportunity. 92 percent of the ICT companies also rely on recruiting measures that are specifically aimed at women, including in the form of university cooperation. 31 percent of the companies have already set goals for a higher proportion of women.
However, the biggest hurdle for a higher proportion of women is simply the lack of qualified female applicants: On average, more than half of the companies complained about this (53 percent). The difference between small and large companies was also evident: around 57 percent of small companies said that they could hardly find any qualified applicants, while the figure for large companies was 24 percent. Obstacles to lateral entry (42 percent) and re-entry (41 percent) were also mentioned as further problems for Bitkom.
