Europeans want to reduce migration more than the rest of the world. This is the result of the Democracy Perception Index published today in Copenhagen by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s organization Alliance of Democracies. Austria is at the top.

While only 12 percent of global respondents ranked reducing migration among the top three issues their government should focus more on, in Europe it was 19 percent. The highest values of all 53 countries analyzed were in Austria (34 percent), Germany (31), the Netherlands (30), France (28) and Sweden (27). The first non-EU country is Chile with 26 percent. It is less important in countries like Russia (five), Ukraine (four), Brazil (one) or Nigeria (one).

Split on relations with Russia

From a global perspective, however, it is much more important to those surveyed that their governments focus more on reducing poverty, fighting corruption, promoting economic growth and improving health care and education. Health care and the fight against poverty prevail in Europe.

Austria is also characterized by a high degree of skepticism about the USA. Austria is divided on the question of relations with Russia, but is reluctant to help Ukraine. For the Democracy Perception Index 2023, the market research institute Latana, in cooperation with the Alliance of Democracies, surveyed a total of almost 54,000 people in 53 countries, which are home to three quarters of the world’s population.
