the former vice president Mike Pence achieved the number of individual donors needed to participate in the first debate of the Republican primaryconfirmed his campaign Monday.
To participate in the discussionwhich will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and will be broadcast on Fox News on August 23, the Republican National Committee (RNC) had stipulated a minimum of 40,000 individual donors, in addition to reaching at least 1% voting intention in the polls.
Pence thus joins a large group of opponents including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Tim Scott, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, among others.
But His main opponent and leader in all the polls will be the man who made him vice president, the controversial and charismatic ex-president Donald Trump..
Trumpwhich is involved in a tangle of judicial processes, has suggested that he may not participate in the debate because of the overwhelming lead he is leading his opponents in all pollsaccording to the media specialized in politics The Hill.
According to the newspaper, Pence campaign contributions have increased in the wake of Trump’s recent impeachment of attempts to reverse the 2020 election resultin which the Republican lost against the current president, Joe Biden.
Trump then defended that the then vice president could refuse to accept the results of the elections, calling them fraudulent, and thus avoid confirming the victory of the Democrat, something to which Pence flatly refused.
The confrontation led to several of the ex-president’s supporters asked for Pence’s head when they stormed the Capitol to try to stop the confirmation of Biden’s election victory, on January 6, 2021.
With Trump’s indictment, Pence has reaffirmed his position and has gone so far as to declare that “someone who asks another person to bypass the Constitution should never be president of the United States again.”
