Derby della Madonnina. Matches between Inter and AC Milan are traditionally among the most intense encounters in football, but on Wednesday Inter put on a one-sided show, winning 2-0.

1–0 after eight minutes played, 2–0 after eleven minutes played.

In the space of three minutes, Inter took command of the Champions League semi-final first leg against Milan.

Inter went into the match with good confidence from the start. In the bag, they had a four-game winning streak from Serie A with an impressive goal difference of 14–1.

With the good self-confidence, the blue and black favorites outwitted AC Milan’s defense at the start of the first half.

Edin Dzeko was responsible for the opening goal after a corner situation when he pushed the ball in on the volley. With the goal, the 37-year-old Dzeko became the second-oldest goalscorer in a semi-final in the Champions League. Ryan Giggs holds the record.

Inter’s second goal was scored by Henrich Mchitarjan as he slipped through the defense and created space. He then took advantage of his chance and established the final result 2–0.

– It was eleven fantastic minutes. But it could have been even better and we could have scored even more goals, says Mchitarjan after the match.

Inter dominated in the first half and had several chances to extend the lead further.

“We have to be mentally ready”

In the second half, the match evened out. Sandro Tonali came close to reducing after a shot hit the post, but Milan didn’t get any closer than that.

– We are very satisfied with the result, but we still have one match left. We have to be mentally ready for the return in front of our fans. Hopefully we can win again and make it to the final, says Mchitarjan.

AC Milan and Inter last met in the Champions League in the quarter-finals in 2005. Then the second meeting had to be abandoned after Inter supporters threw a large number of torches onto the pitch.

Inter’s last Champions League title came in 2010 and AC Milan’s last title is from 2007.

The second leg will be played on Tuesday next week.
