At just 22 years old, the charismatic and talented singer Milena Warthon He already enjoys great popularity thanks to his Andean pop, which mixes the sentiment of folk music with pop. To this is added the letter that sends messages of empowerment. Her most fervent followers are mostly youngsters, who see her as an example to follow.
A few months ago, Trome spoke with this Peruvian, the daughter of a father from Ancash and a mother from Apurima, who also participated in the musical program ‘La Voz’, in the group led by teacher Eva Ayllón. After her success, the singer won the Silver Seagull at the Vina del Mar Festival 2023, in the folklore competition.
Milena, do you feel that with your music you have revolutionized?
Yes, somehow I have. I created Andean pop, with this I don’t mean that before it appeared there weren’t fusions. I revolutionized by presenting an innovative project and staying in a virtual pandemic environment where I went viral.
Have social networks been fundamental in your career?
Of course, before the pandemic began, I was just starting out and I was worried like all of us who make music. However, social networks helped me a lot to continue. When I created my TikTok it was crazy too.
Milena is only 21 years old and at her young age she has already had several accomplishments.
You are the idol of many young people…
I am lucky and responsible. Within my followers I have even set a trend, because there are many girls who want to dress like me and identify with me. I am your example to follow.
Through your music you try to revalue Andean culture…
I want people to know more about us. The Andean did not remain in the time of the Incas. I like all kinds of music. Just as I listen to Pelo D’Ambrosio, I can listen to Harry Styles (British singer).
Where Does The Last Name Warthon Come From?
My great-great-grandparents were from England, but I am more Peruvian than potatoes (laughs).
Have you sung since you were a girl?
Yes, I have a personality full of energy and since I was little I liked to do it. When I was at school she used to tell my little friends, ‘I’ll be a superstar.’ I have always been eccentric.
You don’t just sing, you also write your own songs…
I started doing covers, but some time ago I already made known what I write myself. I just released my song ‘La nena’, which seeks to empower girls. With my own songs I will give stronger messages.
Would you like to sing in Quechua, Aymara and Asháninka?
I studied Quechua, I know the basics, but I still need to improve. I would like to record in an original language and explore that part more. I feel that I am the spokesperson for my culture, for my generation.
Finally, what did your time on ‘La Voz’ mean?
It is a school where I learned a lot and made great friends.
