The Health Secretary announced this afternoon the new Dietary Guidelines 2023, a transdisciplinary effort whose objective is the diffusion and dissemination of healthy messages to reduce the risks of malnutrition in the Mexican population.

The preparation of these guides was an effort between various institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER)from the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (Dinnerprece), the General Directorate for Health Promotion (DGPS) and the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), as well as the civil association El Poder del Consumidor.

Ricardo Cortés Alcalá, head of the General Directorate for Health Promotion, presented the new guidelines, mentioning that it is a work that seeks to establish recommendations for the healthy nutrition low environmental impact.

In addition, it seeks to harmonize current food programs as well as add to public policies to improve the food health of all Mexicans while helping to contribute to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals and international recommendations.

The central lines of these new guides, mentions the specialist, contemplate: the environmental impact of food and its affordability, consumption patterns of the population, sociocultural influence of food and cultural relevance, physical activity and adaptation for girls and boys, pregnant women and infants.

The 2023 guide contemplates 10 recommendations for the Mexican population to have a better diet and nutrition, thus proposing a plate of good eating that prioritizes the consumption of seasonal fruits and vegetables, consuming legumes and foods of animal origin without forgetting oils and natural fats.

The guide also points out the consumption of natural water, since the health authorities recognize that the consumption of soft drinks and sugary drinks is high in Mexico, which has a negative impact on health.

Ricardo Cortés Alcala took advantage of his speech up to this point to clarify that very soon food will not be able to contain trans fats, which is a great advance, he commented.

For its part, the 2023 feeding guide pays attention to breastfeeding, for which reason they invite women to feed their children with breast milk for its high health benefits, in addition to emphasizing that it is a right for which the spaces Workplaces must provide women or lactating people with friendly places to carry out this activity.

Alcalá also mentioned that lowering the consumption of meats and processed meats such as sausages is a recommendation that is included in the guides and invited the population to look for proteins also in a vegetable way because it helps the planet and individual health.

Simón Barquera, president of World Obesity, also participated in the presentation, who celebrated the presentation of the guide, as he mentions that it was prepared by a transdisciplinary team of more than 10 institutions “without conflict of interest.”
