On June 9, 2023, an expressionist masterpiece by Alexej von Jawlensky will come onto the art auction market: With “Girl with Braid” from 1910, he creates a unique key work. With the mysterious stylization of the female head and the multicolored face that emancipates itself from any natural model, Jawlensky creates a magnificent portrait here that opens the way to those “strong and powerful heads” (Clemens Weiler) that he painted in 1912. To this day, these works by Jawlensky are among his most important and sought-after works. “Girl with Braid” was created in Jawlensky’s decisive phase of his work, when he invented German Expressionism together with his partner Marianne von Werefkin and the artist couple Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky in Murnau,” explains the Jawlensky expert dr Roman Zieglgansberger, Curator for classical modern art at the Kunstmuseum Wiesbaden.

The spirited painting is an icon of modernism,” is glad Nicola Countess Keglevich, Senior Director at Ketterer Kunst. “The dawn of modernity began in December 1909 with the first exhibition of the “New Artists’ Association Munich” in the Thannhauser Gallery with works by Jawlensky, Werefkin, Kandinsky and Münter. The deviating power of color and the detachment from nature was heavily criticized as painting gone wild. Today, this progressive artistic path, detached from all conventions, is considered one of the most important chapters in art history of the 20th century.”

This masterpiece from a Swiss private collection will be called up in the evening sale on June 9th in Munich with an estimated price of EUR 3.5 – 4.5 million.

The painterly quality of “Girl with Braid” is simply breathtaking,” says dr Roman Ziegglängsberger, who has already published numerous books and essays on Jawlensky and Werefkin. “It is therefore not surprising that the work was formerly in the Clemens Weiler Collection. Weiler was the first Jawlensky biographer and expert after World War II. After all, it was such works that made art subjective and emotional at the beginning of the 20th century and in the run-up to the Blaue Reiter.

Girl with braid” – an intoxicatingly unleashed, expressionistic masterpiece.

The coloristic and compositional mastery and spontaneity in combination with the exciting perspective and the zoom-focused image section characterizes “Girl with Braid” in a special way. The skin is rendered in bright green with strong accents of blue, dark green, turquoise and pink-orange. The color is applied in moving swipes to the unprimed, sometimes boldly left painting surface. In addition to the face with the large, almond-shaped eyes, Jawlensky also confidently used the elongated surfaces of the supported forearms and hands for his play of colors, which was completely freed from the color specifications of nature. This expressive spectacle is framed by the deep black of the hair and the vibrant dark blue of the dress in front of the deep, blazing crimson background applied to the painting ground with an equally lively stroke.

The art-historical significance of “Girl with Braids” in Jawlensky’s oeuvre is also reflected in his extensive exhibition history. It was exhibited at the legendary Jawlensky exhibition on the occasion of the artist’s 100th birthday in the Wiesbaden Museum and in the Lenbachhaus in Munich.
