Parallel to their daily work, she as a veterinarian, and he as a child who wants to play soccer all day, they train three hours a day to succeed in the field. ‘National and World Marinera Competition 2023′ that this year it is not held in Trujillo, but in the Callao Sports Center.

Luisa, since when have you been dancing the norteña marinera?

For four years. I put my son in a sailor’s workshop and then classes were opened for parents. But the truth is that I’ve been dancing since I was a child, I’m a frustrated dancer, ha ha ha. But I also loved animals, so I studied Veterinary. Thanks to my son I fulfilled my dream of being a dancer.

And what is inherited is not stolen…

Oh, of course. My Ian (son) has so much more. In fact, he is already known as “El Mocherito” for the “mochero” style that is danced without shoes. He is a trome, his style is quite peculiar and that is why they know him.

Did you imagine dancing with him?

The truth is, no. Nor did I think that thanks to his classes I would resume my dream. The best thing that the sailor has brought me is that. The emotion I feel is infinite. We’ve won mom and son dancing contests too. And I have won first place in the ‘All Bloods’ contest.

Have you participated before in the Trujillo contest?

In 2020, weeks before we were locked up due to the pandemic, we had only been practicing the sailor for a few months and we went to the contest thanks to my aunt who is like my second mother and her daughter who also danced. I didn’t win, but the experience was amazing.

Now how are you preparing?

We rehearse at least three hours a day. For adults it is easier, but Ian is 9 years old and sometimes it is difficult for him to understand that this is the rhythm of the professional sailor. Because she also likes other things, like soccer.

What qualities does a good sailor dancer need?

I think that anyone can dance it, but you must be cheerful, flirtatious, agile and very disciplined. Take it seriously, not as a game, the professional sailor is like any other career, it needs commitment and dedication.

What steps are inevitable?

A good brushing, toe and heel, move the scarf and skirt well, maintain the posture. The sailor is a mix of falling in love, rejection, flirting.

The one who dances the marinera can dance anything, is that true?

But not because it is difficult, but because the sailor makes you move your whole body and gives you a lot of security and confidence in yourself.
