In the first year of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the number of residents in Potsdam increased significantly. This is shown by the current quarterly report from the city hall’s statistics office. According to this, exactly 186,262 Potsdam residents lived in the city at the end of 2022, 2,861 residents more than at the end of 2021. In 2021, the increase was around 1,200 Potsdam residents. The city last experienced growth similar to this in 2018, before that, around 4,000 additional residents per year had been registered since 2014.

According to the statistics, residents who have fled from the Ukraine in particular are newly registered in Potsdam. At the beginning of 2022, 928 Ukrainian citizens were still resident in Potsdam, a year later there were 3216 – almost 2300 more people.

A total of 18,730 non-German Potsdam residents were registered at the beginning of the year, and at the end of the year there were 22,494 – i.e. 3764 more people. The proportion of foreigners in Potsdam rose from 10.2 to 12.1 percent.

With the new immigration values, Potsdam is again above the last forecast immigration values of up to 2200 new citizens per year after the past few years. The constant growth is also a challenge for Potsdam, because the municipal infrastructure – from schools to apartments to the water supply – has to be constantly expanded.

There is still no complete data on births or deaths. Up to the fourth quarter, there were 1,354 deaths here, more than the 1,222 births during that time.
