More than 6,000 flights are canceled or delayed in the US due to strong storms

Washington.- More than 6,000 flights have been canceled or delayed this Monday in the United States due to strong storms that hit the east, southeast and midwest of the country.

The most affected airports are in the New York City area (LaGuardia, Newark, John F. Kennedy), Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, which serves Atlanta, and O’Hare Airport, in Chicago, according to data from the FligthAware flight tracking portal.

For their part, the airlines that have had the most cancellations or delays are United Airlines, with 29% of flights affected; followed by Republic with 23% and Endeavor Air with 16%.

The National Weather Service (NWS, for its acronym in English) indicated today on its website that the storms and rains will continue Monday night, through Tuesday, with the possibility of flooding in the east of the country as the weather front moves to the north of the country.

In turn, the Midwest will also be affected by heavy rains, which will last even until Wednesday night, according to the NWS.

The inclement weather has left at least four people dead in the country, in the states of Arkansas, Indiana and Georgia, where tornadoes have also been reported.

In Ohio, severe tornado-spawning storms caused an estimated 400,000 homes and businesses to lose power from weather events that keep the eastern part of the country, from North Carolina to Pennsylvania, on alert.

With the storm system moving east, more than 90 million people are on severe weather watch Monday.

Cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC are included in the highest risk area.
