MTA assures that new doors in the subway have been a success

Authorities from the metropolitan transportation agency have indicated that the new subway turnstile design has been a success in reducing fare evasion.

MTA Chairman Janno Lieber said new turnstiles installed at the Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue station late last year were intended to benefit passengers getting off the AirTrain from JFK Airport who were carrying wheeled luggage.

He says those passengers often used the emergency exit to exit the station, keeping it open at all times and allowing a stream of people to enter without paying.

Lieber says that while the new turnstiles are not perfect, they represent an improvement in fare evasion, and that changes are being made.

Lieber also mentioned “tricks” that have gone viral on social media that show how the new barriers are easy to open, stating that the agency is in the process of correcting the problem.

Earlier this week, the agency said it would soon implement 15-second delays at emergency exits at three subway stations as another measure to reduce fare evasion.
