Feelings and emotions influence individual decisions and behavior to a large extent. But the perception of the inner and outer world is always interpreted. So what does reason mean? Gert Scobel will deal with this topic on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at 9:00 p.m. Before that, 3sat will show the science documentary “Mysterious gut feeling – how clever is our inner voice?” as part of “WissenHoch2” at 8:15 p.m. by Ekkehard Wetzel and Birte Rauschenberg. The documentation is available in the 3sat media library until July 2, 2027, and the program “scobel” for five years from the day of broadcast.
In democracies, decisions should be made with reason. However, many crises and conflicts prove the opposite. There seems to be no lack of education in Western societies: never before has so much information been accessible. There are many reasons for the inadequacies of rationality, such as inertia, disinterest in certain topics, stubbornness, striving for economic improvements or suppressing fear of loss. Feelings and emotions influence individual decisions and behavior to a large extent:

Thought processes are coupled with sensations and sensory perceptions via the brain. This leads to the perception of the inner and outer world being interpreted. In addition, power-preserving and strategic factors and thus narcissism and egoism play an important role in politics.
Why wars cannot be prevented or ended with reasonable arguments
So how can unreasonable people and nations be brought to their senses? Can recognizing contradictions help change attitudes? And what perspectives are there if decisions and actions are always only possible with limited rationality? The program explores the limits of reasonable decisions and actions and, among other things, seeks answers to the questions of why climate and environmental protection cannot be regulated solely with the help of rational decisions and why wars cannot be prevented or ended with reasonable arguments. Gert Scobel welcomes the psychologist Christine Kirchhoff, the philosopher Michael Hampe and the neuroscientist and psychiatrist Philipp Sterzer as guests.
The brain creates unconscious connections when making gut decisions
As early as 8.15 p.m., 3sat will be showing the documentary “Mysterious gut feeling – how clever is our inner voice?” as part of “WissenHoch2”. Gut decisions appear to be free from distorting influences. But if you don’t know the answer to a question, the brain makes unconscious connections. For example, in guessing questions, the results are influenced by numbers that have just been encountered. This so-called “anchor phenomenon” works, for example, during a sale in a furniture store or when buying a used car. In the documentary, cognitive psychologist Christian Stöcker explains what cognitive distortions people are subject to and how they can be avoided. Using examples from communication, economic and climate research, it becomes clear how important it is to understand cognitive processes in order to make better decisions.
“WissenHoch2” – one topic, two formats: at 8.15 p.m. a documentary will examine relevant scientific questions; at 9 p.m. Gert Scobel will discuss the topic with his guests from various scientific disciplines.
