Stoltenberg’s preference for Ukraine to join NATO is not in sight. After all, all NATO countries would have to agree to this. The case of Sweden and the Turkish resistance to it alone show how high the hurdle is. Immediate accession to NATO would also increase the risk of escalation and make a peaceful agreement impossible.
Assistance with Ukraine is more important than ever. Because since the last meeting of the Ukraine contact group in January, the international scene has darkened. Russia and China form a common front. They also form alliances with other authoritarian states in the Middle East or in Africa. It’s about securing freedom, worldwide.
