There are questions that drive Nintendo fans again and again. Why isn’t Waluigi still a fighter in Smash? What is the best console in the Nintendo cosmos? But also: Which is actually the best Zelda game? The answer to that is not so easy to give – even if one ignores personal preferences. After all, there are several truly outstanding milestones in the Zelda story. Ocarina of Time successfully brought the Zelda series into the 3D age, Breath of the Wild revolutionized the series thanks to an extremely free gameplay that invites discovery and then there’s A Link to the Past. The latter essentially shaped the action-adventure genre and cemented Zelda’s place in the video game world. We’re devoting a 10-page XXL retrospective to this iconic adventure with Prickly-eared Link, in which we’ll tell you, among other things, why the SNES game has aged so well and what significance it had for the series.

But in the current issue there are of course many other highlights for Nintendo fans, including the detailed report on the career and life’s work of the Nintendo visionary Satoru Iwata, who unfortunately died much too young. In a column, Johannes explains why he’s looking forward to the Super Mario movie more than any Switch games this year. We’ll also tell you our first impressions of Hogwarts Legacy, put Fire Emblem Engage to the test, clarify whether Spongebob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake has become a sponge-tastic adventure and introduce you to the JRPG insider tip Chained Echoes.

Finally, we would like to draw special attention to our 20-page report, which deals with the topic of whether loot boxes in games are gambling. We have given this serious topic a lot of space due to its scope and complexity.
