Young Peruvians, from public and private universities, continue to show their commitment to research and the development of their talents. For example: the ‘Proyecto Ares’ team has begun to build a space exploration vehicle in Peru that will be presented to NASA: they designed a ‘rover’, powered by humanswhich responds to exploration needs of astronauts on Mars.

NASA selected two Peruvian teams
In October 2022, ‘Proyecto Ares’, made up of students from the University of Piura, was one of the two groups (in addition to the one from UNI) selected to represent Peru in the Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC)NASA contest, and they have already started the manufacturing phase of their Human Power Vehicle (HPV).
They must show it first virtually on March 2 and in April a selected group will travel to Huntsville, Alabama (United States) to present it to NASAwhere In addition to traversing the ground and avoiding obstacles, you will have to perform tasks such as extracting water from a horizontal tube.
Ares Project is made up of 55 students of Engineering, Communication, Law and Economic and Business Sciences from the University of Piura. “We organize times for our studies and for the production of this project, which is a vehicle with ecological, functional criteria and adaptability to geographically diverse terrain such as Mars”said Javier Reyes FariasUDEP student and project director.

Pure pedal space vehicle
Reyes Farías explained that this vehicle will not use fuel or electric motorsyou will not need to ‘tank’ or carry an extra battery. “Neither will he use chains, like the bicycle, because they could come off or break and they need lubrication. It will work with the impulse energy of the pilotsto avoid mechanical failure of the engine or lack of fuel”, detailed.
They are manufacturing parts and carrying out assembly tests. In addition, they have foreseen that the tire rolling system will be without air (through a tread designed in 3D, with solid geometry criteria, which allows it to adhere to the surface) and will have easy assembly and disassembly (for transfer on expeditions).

- 61 teams participate in the contest research from prestigious universities around the world. For Peru: UNI and UDEP.
- The Project Ares vehicle design It contemplates criteria of resistance, direction and suspension, with springs and flexible arms (that cushions blows from rough terrain). It will be based on aluminum (resistant and light material).
