A racing driver performed a risky maneuver in a car race. Perilous action, inspired by a video game, is now officially banned.
It’s an unlikely story you may have heard, back in the fall of 2022. A race car driver used a video game-inspired maneuver during a real Nascar race. His tactic? Send your car against the wall to go along it at full speed, in order to get as many places as possible. And too bad for the crumpled sheet metal.
The action seriously damaged the vehicle, but for the driver – Ross Chastain – the game was worth the effort. He was able to grab five places by rubbing his vehicle against the outer edge of the track, allowing him to move from tenth to fifth. But it’s a perilous attempt and a one-off: it can only be done at the end of the race, after the car has deteriorated too much.
This daring drive was directly inspired by a GameCube video game, when the driver was playing it as a child. ” I played a lot of Nascar 2005 on GameCube [avec mon frère] growing up, and you can get away with it, and I never knew if it was really going to work.
