A walker took several photos of a seal on the Lower Rhine between Wesel and Duisburg on Monday. This is extremely rare.

In the Rhine between Duisburg and Wesel apparently a seal is swimming. Walker Marvin Schneiders got up at around 1.45 p.m. on Monday afternoon from Voerde-Götterswickerhamm several shots of the animal. “Suddenly the seal looked at us curiously for at least 20 seconds. Then she ducked down and looked again,” Schneiders told the editors. “Then she appeared again and was gone.” He had never seen a seal in the Rhine before.

In fact, it is extremely rare for the animals to get lost in the river – after all, it is around 250 kilometers from the Lower Rhine to their habitat in the North Sea. According to the Western Ruhr Area Biological Station, there have only been three seal sightings in the Rhine before. However, the last one was not long ago: In February 2022, an animal was out and about for several days near Duisburg and Krefeld in the Rhine, and it was documented several times by eyewitnesses in pictures and videos.
