Neighbors heard heartbreaking screams during a home fire in La Victoria

While a large fire consumed a residence located on Eugenio street in the La Victoria community, near Alto Bonito, early this Sunday morning, July 10, residents of the place heard the heartbreaking screams of a man who is believed to have been trapped inside the structure.

“My wife and my mother-in-law say they heard very loud screams. Apparently like men’s,” said José Aníbal Garza, a resident of the place. The voice, he told himself, was like someone desperate and in pain.

According to the Starr County Sheriff’s Office, the fire occurred at approximately 3:36 am and caused other residences to be evacuated. As a result of the accident, one person, who is in stable condition, was transferred to Starr County Memorial Hospital.

As for the residents of the burned house, Garza said what happened was “unfortunate.” So far the authorities have not confirmed the death of the person believed to have been trapped. However, they continue to search for her remains.
