Netflix film subverts princess stories, says director

Speaking to Empire, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo explained how Maiden, from Netflixsubverts princess stories.

“Traditionally the princess is always the victim, from beginning to end. But here she has to save herself; no one comes to help her. I’ve always had a strong connection with medieval fantasy stories, especially those with a fairy tale aspect. But this film It literally turns everything upside down. I love the dark take on these stories and how it turns them into a contemporary adventure.”

“The reference of dragons is so high. We worked hard on a new concept, a great meeting point between fantasy (and) real creatures. The dragon in this film is a character, not just a beast, but also something else.”

Maiden premieres between March and May 2024 on Netflix.
