A Netflix’s new documentary drama series that portrays Queen Cleopatra as a black African woman has sparked controversy in Egypt.

A lawyer has filed a lawsuit against Netflix accusing the series of trying to “erase the Egyptian identity” and going against Egypt’s media laws.

“Netflix is trying to stir up confusion, spreading false and misleading facts that the origin of Egyptian civilization is black,” he said.

The old debate was reignited and Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass joined in, stating in a statement that “Cleopatra was not black”.

The actress chosen for the role is Adele James and producer Jada Pinket Smith has already come to justify the choice with the importance of telling “stories about black queens”. The protagonist is even being the target of harassment and racist comments. On her personal Twitter account, she already reacted and said that “if you don’t like the cast, don’t watch the series”.

The premiere is scheduled for May 10.
