You may not know it, but Netflix publishes its “ISP Speed Index” every month, which measures the performance of the platform during prime time among different Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the world.

If you were wondering which telecom operator offers the best speed to watch Netflix, the streaming service gives you a first element of the answer thanks to its “speed index”. Are Orange, SFR, Free and Bouygues all in the same boat?

The Netflix ISP Speed Index

Note that the results presented here by Netflix do not measure the overall performance of other data that may pass through the ISP network, only that of its streaming service. The results presented here are the latest as of December 2022 at the time of this writing.

Without more suspense, we discover that the French ranking is very homogeneous. Thus, Bouygues Télécom, Free, Orange and SFR THD (very high speed) are tied and at the top of the ranking with an average speed of 3.6 Mbit/s, up 0.2 Mbit/s for the first three. Indeed, it had been two months that SFR THD alone occupied the first place. It is now joined by its competitors. Only SFR DSL fell with 3.4 Mbit/s on average, despite an increase of 0.2 Mbit/s from one month to the next.

And globally?

It is also interesting to see where France stands in terms of speeds on Netflix compared to other countries. That’s good, Netflix groups the countries offering the same speed by region. France is in a good position, but only in the second group, alongside Argentina, Finland, Germany, India, Japan, Italy, Romania and the Philippines. As you can see below, these countries also benefit from an average speed of 3.6 Mbit/s on Netflix.

With an average of 3.8 Mbit/s, the top of the ranking is occupied by Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea and even the United States. Many countries ultimately stand in a handkerchief. Only a few drop out, such as Honduras (3 Mbit/s), Pakistan (2.8 Mbit/s), the Dominican Republic (2.6 Mbit/s) and Venezuela (1.8 Mbit/s).

The speeds displayed here are far from those offered by Netflix during the 2020 confinements when the company’s servers were put to the test. Some users complained of having speeds below 1 Mbit/s, insufficient figures to take full advantage of their subscription offering 1080p or Ultra HD definitions. A few days later, the company gradually increased the bit rate of its video streams to return to “normal” program quality.

Today, Netflix offers HD quality for its “Essential with ads” (€5.99) and “Essential” (€8.99) packages, Full HD quality for its “standard” subscription (€13.49) and Ultra HD for the “premium” version (€17.99). Here are the speeds recommended by the streaming platform for the different definitions:
