If you get into The Last of Us on PS4 or PS5 thanks to the HBO series, we give you some tips for… surviving.

The adaptation of The Last of Us by HBO is the cultural phenomenon of this beginning of the year. And for good reason, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have succeeded in sublimating a video game which was already, originally, a masterpiece. Maybe you discovered Joel and Ellie directly with this adaptation broadcast in France on Prime Video.

If this is the case, it is very likely that you want to launch the game. There are two commercial versions: The Last of Us Remastered on PlayStation 4 and The Last of Us Part Ithe remake, on PlayStation 5. No structural difference exists between the two, except that the remake is much more beautiful and that mechanics are reworked.

Bottles and bricks are your friends

Never be without bricks or bottles. These tools, which you can find everywhere, are decisive assets to get you out of the worst situations:

  • They help distract enemies;
  • They help to kill enemies: you can gather several zombies to then throw a bomb or a molotov cocktail at them;
  • They help to repel an enemy, by throwing at them.

Run away when things go wrong

Drop your gamer ego. In The Last of Us, fleeing is not retreating or cowardly abandoning a fight. It’s a realistic post-apo universe, and sometimes certain situations can overwhelm you — there can be too many enemies, you can be ill-equipped, etc. Assess the danger so you don’t hesitate to simply avoid direct confrontation. While fleeing, you can also hide, to eliminate your enemies in stealth.

Save the bullets

Bullets are precious. Very precious. Faced with some infected, they may be your one and only recourse. In fact, as soon as you can shoot an enemy without spending a single bullet, opt for this solution.

Search, it’s survival

This is valid for many games, but The Last of Us is based on post-apocalyptic survival, so this element is accentuated: you have to search to find every possible resource and, to do this, not to neglect any room or nook. A few bullets, a bottle, mechanical parts for your weapons, can make the difference in the sequence that will follow.

Which capacities to improve in priority?

Two improvements (on several levels), thanks to the pills that you find on your way everywhere, are to be prioritized:

  • Health (maximum health and healing speed);
  • perception/hearing.

Indeed, the pills remain quite rare and, inevitably, you will not be able to improve everything during your game (in the new game +, where you keep the stocks and skills of your previous game, this will be possible). So you have to choose the upgrades wisely. Health is of course essential, and perception allows you to prepare strategies necessary for survival.

Similarly, craft the second holster in-game as soon as possible — switching between weapons is life changing. On workbenches, to improve weapons, don’t underestimate the importance of reloading speed: when faced with hordes of enemies, a second wasted and it’s finite. Also cherish the shotgun, certainly more limited in appearance than weapons that shoot more, but at a good distance and aiming well, they save you a lot of misery.

Finally: the surin. Surin should be your mantra. You always need, when possible, a surin. The surin saves you against clickers, in particular. So you always want to have a quill on you. We hope to have written the word surin enough for the message to get across.

Keep checking what you can craft

The materials cannot be stored in very large quantities, but it can be used to craft quite a few things. Regularly check if you can design something to heal yourself, a bomb, a molotov cocktail, a handgun, etc.

Save!

It sucks, but the autosave tends to make you forget that you can do it manually wherever you want. However, if you see a difficult confrontation coming or you are getting out of it with the sweat of your brow, it is a good time to make a manual save. Because, really, in The Last of Usyou do not want to relive a complicated discreet or direct confrontation twice in a row.
