The streaming service probably wants to do that next year too go new ways and charge additional fees for all those profiles that don’t live in the account owner’s household – but still want to access Netflix content by sharing the password. Now, however, one has new questions British authority raised.

Is Password Sharing Illegal Now?

As part of a new online campaign with Meta has the UK Government’s Intellectual Property Office published a document in which users are informed, among other things, about digital piracy on the Internet. From a report by TorrentFreak reveals that the British authority also recognizes the sharing of passwords for streaming services as a Copyright infringement classifies. So that means: Anyone who operates private password sharing commits one here offense.

It didn’t take too long for the UK Office to remove the password sharing section from the document again. Before that, however, it was made clear in a statement that nothing can be ruled out in this area.

Here it says to TorrentFreak: “There are a number of provisions in criminal and civil law that could also be applied to password sharing – if the intent is to give users access to copyrighted works without payment.”

New Netflix subscription with ads
