DJI advertises its latest member of the RS series of motorized tripods as a “travel stabilizer”. The term is not entirely wrong, because the device is in fact extremely compact. It weighs only 795 grams with the arm for horizontal shots, i.e. the landscape format, and is folded up, according to the manufacturer, 40 percent smaller than the previous RS3 model, specifically the device is 32.3 centimeters short.

On the other hand, the total weight of the camera and lens has also dropped from three to two kilograms. Apparently the battery and the motors have been made smaller. Even with the zoom lens fully extended – with the focus shifted forward – the Sony A7 S3 with 24-70mm F2.8 GM, the Canon EOS R5 with RF24-70mm F2.8 STM and the Fuji X-H2S should still be used can be fully stabilized with XF 18-5mm F2.8-4. More cameras can be found in the compatibility list by DJI.

Probably because of its weight, there is not a single Nikon DSLR in it, and the Z 7 II is also the end of the mirrorless Z models. It looks a little better with older cameras from Canon, among other things, the 5D Mark IV is supported here. In general, the bodies must be able to be controlled via Bluetooth or USB cable, because functions such as recording or ISO sensitivity can also be set via the gimbal so that the camera does not have to be touched and the image remains stable. Using the Ronin app on a smartphone, you can also program your own movement patterns, among other things.

The upright format (vertical) is becoming increasingly important for social media, which is why the RS3 Mini has its own mode for it. To do this, an additional arm must be mounted on the quick-release plate, the device then weighs 850 grams. The gimbal increases by a further 128 grams when the pop-up tripod, which also serves as a handle extension, is attached.

When it comes to the term, DJI remains unusually vague. In the technical data There are 10 hours, but they only apply when the gimbal is idle – that’s pretty impractical. The previous RS 3 and RS 3 Pro come to two and a half hours, so that the RS 3 Mini, designed for lighter cameras, should also be in this range. Charging during operation, for example via a power bank, is possible.

The gimbal costs 389 euros and can already be used at DJI be ordered, the delivery date to Germany is January 20th. The device should also be available in specialist shops immediately.
