Since the energy and climate crisis, oil heaters have had a bad image. There are also new systems with modern heating technology.

The mild winter of 2022/23 is currently helping many people in Germany. The war in Ukraine and the associated energy and price crisis have caused energy costs to rise massively compared to the previous year. Prices for heating oil and gas had exploded in 2022. At times, a liter of heating oil cost more than two euros – a sad record in the history of the Federal Republic. In the meantime the situation has changed energy market a little calmed down – but a rethink has set in.

Oil heating with Condensing technology most efficient: how to determine your heating type

Away from classic fuels and instead to new ones heating techniques like a heat pump – that’s the idea. But in terms of costs and power consumption, heat pumps are not an option for everyone. Primarily, the costs for purchase and installation are enormous, despite state subsidies for heat pumps – you have to reckon with up to 15,000 euros. For some consumers, therefore, a partial replacement of the oil heater initially makes sense – this means: Only individual components of the heater are replaced.

Such partial replacements for oil heaters are also recommended by experts. However, even such small modernizations are not always necessary. If an oil heating system is still comparatively young and works efficiently, it can do without problems continue to be operated. Although there is an obligation to replace oil heating systems, this is aimed at old devices (30 years and older) and not at new systems. New oil heaters can be easily recognized by the following factors:

  • Oil condensing heating systems are the most modern oil heating systems – with this technology you are up to date
  • Oil heaters under 15 years
  • Oil heaters integrated into hybrid heating systems

Oil heaters with Use condensing technology: This is how much money you can save every year

The big advantage of an oil condensing boiler compared to older systems is the so-called heat exchanger. In principle, an oil heating system with condensing technology works like a conventional one oil heating – the difference is in the details. As is well known, the heat from the burner flows into the heating circuit and hot water preparation. This creates water vapor – with old oil heating systems, this escapes unused to the outside via the chimney. A heat exchanger is used in a new oil condensing boiler.

The heat exchanger in one oil heating with condensing technology converts the heat from the water vapor into usable heating energy. The company, which specializes in heating, reports that this reduces heating oil consumption by around 35 percent “Viessmann”. In addition, it is also an advantage from a climate point of view, since the heat is not simply let out into the air pointlessly. Oil heaters with an older technology – these include constant and low-temperature oil heaters – are no longer up to date and should be replaced.

Replacing oil heating with old technology: the state pays a subsidy – under one condition

There is a subsidy from the state for the exchange of old oil heating systems – the so-called heat exchange bonus. This is granted when the old gas or oil heating system is taken out of service and replaced by a new technology such as a heat pump or pellet heating system. Anyone who also invests in one of the two technologies mentioned can benefit from state subsidies for the new heating system in 2023. In addition to the heat exchange bonus, there are various basic subsidies.

You can also benefit from these basic subsidies if you invest in a hybrid heating system. This means: In addition to oil heating, a second heating system is used – such as a heat pump. Also the combination of a pellet and a oil heating is theoretically possible. Which hybrid model is suitable for a household should be decided individually. A specialist company or independent energy consultant is the right place to go. Below is a brief overview of the different systems:

Combine oil heating with a heat pump or pellets: So much funding is possible

heating Costs financial support

oil and heat pump

17,000 to 29,000 euros

up to 25 percent

Oil and pellet heating

18,000 to 29,000 euros

up to 10 percent

oil and solar thermal

14,000 to 22,000 euros

none

In the respective subsidy rates in the table is the Heat Exchange Bonus deliberately not included. This amounts to ten percentage points and is often already included in offers from specialist companies or companies. However, anyone who continues to use their oil heating at the same time does not receive this subsidy. Therefore, a hybrid model is usually only worthwhile if the oil heater is already in place and not too old. If the oil heating system is no longer working efficiently, it can be financially more attractive to rely entirely on a new heating system.
