On December 23, the news came that the plans for a high-speed line between Gothenburg and Stockholm are put on hold. Instead, the Swedish Transport Administration must cost-effectively review the current track between Borås and Gothenburg.

The project, which has been paused, has been under investigation for eight years and would reduce travel time between the cities.

The focus will be on reducing costs and improving work commuting to Landvetter. The plan is therefore no longer for trains between Borås and Gothenburg to reach speeds above 250 km/h.

Now Gothenburg’s new red-green government wants to gather all parties across block boundaries behind an official letter to the government to resume the train investment.

Want to put pressure on the government

S, V and MP, who have a majority in the municipal board, have made a demand that the city “request the government to resume work on the project Gothenburg – Borås, part of new trunk lines.”

– We previously had a broad political consensus that Gothenburg’s residents and businesses need better train services to Borås. If there is anyone who can put pressure on the government and stop this betrayal, it is the parties that form the foundation of the government. We want to give their local representatives the chance to rise above party politics and put Gothenburg’s best interests first, writes Jonas Attenius (S) in a press release.

SD: Far too expensive

But Jörgen Fogelklou (SD) is not prepared to sign the proposal and says that there have been no political talks before the request.

– We have been against this for many years, it is far too costly, he says.

– They investigated, investigated and investigated. I think you have to take a second look. But it is clear that we have to upgrade our existing tracks, for example by building double tracks, says Jörgen Fogelklou (SD).
