Embracer Group and Amazon Games have announced a partnership to develop a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings world. The game is still in an early stage of development, but is described as an open and “permanent” world adventure that will include stories from Bilbo – The Hobbit’s Adventures and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The game will be released for both PC and consoles.

Embracer Group bought the rights to The Lord of the Rings last August, and created the subsidiary Middle-earth Enterprises to manage them. However, the development and release of this game in question will be handled by Amazon Games and their studio in California.
“Our team has been hoping to give players a new take on The Lord of the Rings for a long time. We are both honored and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprise is entrusting us with this iconic world,” said Amazon Games CEO Christoph Hartmann.
