New York State Toxicity in the Gowanus Canal

The state is testing soil in neighborhoods near the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn for potentially toxic fumes.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation, DEC, revealed that several projects are underway to detect the presence of toxins in homes and buildings that could potentially cause cancer.

The agency is seeking permission from home and building owners to collect samples inside their homes and businesses as part of the investigation.

The DEC advised that the optimal time to conduct this type of testing is during the “heating season,” the fall and winter months.

Experts say that this is when buildings are closed and are susceptible to the intrusion of vapors coming from the ground.

The Department also sent out community newsletters in hopes of encouraging area residents to participate in testing.
