Nintendo of Japan has recently filed a patent that would suggest the possible return of Nintendogs in a new form, i.e. as a mobile game/application for smartphones and tablets, with support for Augmented Reality.

There is still nothing certain about it but the patent describes in detail various ways to take care of a puppy with your smartphone, increasing realism thanks to Augmented Reality. At the moment it’s just an idea but the patent is particularly complete and seems to allude to the effective use of these technologies in a dedicated application.

And besides, Nintendo had already tried something similar with Nintendogs, a real worldwide phenomenon on Nintendo DS, a simulator with lots of puppies to cuddle, look after and raise, in full Digital Pets style. The Nintendogs phenomenon was short but intense and the original DS games were followed by Nintendogs+Cats in 2011, however the franchise has since been put on hiatus.

Who knows if 2023 may not really represent the right year for the return of Nintendogs or in any case of a similar project by the Kyoto housewe will presumably find out in the coming months. And what do you think, would you be in favor of a Nintendogs for smartphones?
