Because of the currently difficult economic situation, many companies are holding back on salary increases. That’s reason enough for the majority of workers to leave.

Whether food, fuel or energy prices: In the course of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, many things have become more expensive. Last year, consumer prices increased by almost 7 percent compared to the previous year. The Munich Ifo Institute sees the peak of the inflation wave as past, but only expects a very slow decline in inflation.

The bottom line is that people have less money in their pockets – and may be dependent on receiving more wages from their employer. However, if he is not willing to raise his salary, 58 percent of dependent employees in Germany consider changing their job. This is the result of a recent survey by opinion research institute Civey for t-online.

Accordingly, 39 percent answered the question “Would you consider changing jobs because of a lack of salary increases?” with “Yes, definitely” and 19 percent with “rather yes”. Less than a third of those surveyed (18 percent “rather no”, 11 percent “no, definitely not”) would not change their job if there were no salary increases. 13 percent are undecided.

But the older workers get, the less willing they are to change jobs, even if they don’t get a raise. Among the 50 to 64-year-olds, just over a third of the survey participants answered the question with “no”, among the over 65-year-olds who are about to retire, the figure was even 44 percent.

In this survey category, however, it should be noted that the statistical error is 8.6 percent and the results are therefore less representative than the overall evaluation.

About the methodology: The survey included the responses of 2,542 people in Germany who were selected to be representative of the population and who were asked between April 21 and April 26, 2023: “Would you consider changing jobs because of a lack of salary increases?” The statistical error for the overall results is 3.4 percent; it can differ for subgroups.
