“1899” is turned off – in two senses.

On the one hand, the German series by “Dark” makers Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese is just as crazy as its predecessor. On the other hand, the story is told after only eight episodes, because there will be no sequel to the Atlantic adventure.

That’s what the brains behind “1899” revealed on Instagram. “It is with a heavy heart” that we have to announce that the series will not be renewed. “We would have loved to have completed this incredible journey with a second and third season. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you imagined. That’s life.” The screenwriter and the director thanked the “millions of disappointed fans” “with all their hearts”.

In fact, the end of the most expensive German series of all time, with production costs of around 50 million euros, comes as a surprise. The eight-part series was liked by 90 percent of Google users, and 74 percent of viewers of the Rotten Tomatoes industry service.

After the release last autumn, Netflix announced that “1899” was the most searched series in more than 50 countries. But apparently the success fell short of the hoped-for numbers.

Fans are now mobilizing against the streaming giant. Almost 15,000 people have already signed a petition at change.org to persuade Netflix to do at least one more season. It said: “There are a lot of unanswered questions and a huge cliffhanger at the end of the last episode. We want a sequel and a proper ending to the story.”

And that’s what “1899” is all about: The ocean steamer “Kerberos” sets off from London to New York at the turn of the century. The passengers hope to start a new life in America. But the Atlantic crossing turns into a nightmare when the “Kerberos” encounters a ghost ship on the open sea. The fates of the travelers are mysteriously linked.
