North Korea's Permanent Mission to the UN defends its right to use nuclear weapons for its "self defense"

MADRID, 5 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Permanent Mission of North Korea to the United Nations has criticized this Friday “the vassal forces” who have rejected the “strengthening of the nuclear deterrent for self-defense” on their part and has defended that it is “a fair exercise of their sovereignty to prevent the outbreak of a nuclear war,” the state news agency KCNA reported.

“The signatories of the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) should not have problems with North Korea for its legitimate exercise of sovereignty, since it legally withdrew from the NPT 20 years ago,” the DPRK permanent mission told the Office of the UN in its statement, issued jointly with international organizations in Vienna.

North Korea justifies its position by arguing that such reinforcement will “defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity and control and manage the situation on the Korean peninsula in a stable manner, under the unstable security environment in the region caused by such a nuclear threat from United States and its allies.

In this sense, the mission charged against the North American power for having nuclear weapons and for “unilaterally prioritizing” its “narrow security interests”, urging it to “immediately stop movements to ‘share nuclear energy'” or “strengthen deterrence extended with non-nuclear states that undermine the foundation of the international nuclear non-proliferation system”.

“Its nuclear force will never be a threat to those countries that respect its sovereignty and security interests”, added the permanent mission, which has invited the international community to “raise the voices of denunciation against the dangerous US threat of nuclear use and illegal acts such as the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the root cause of instability and confrontation, and immediately take practical steps to ensure world peace and security”.
