Both Labor Day and German Unity Day always fall on the same date. If it’s a weekday, ideally we get a long weekend or the opportunity to take a vacation on a bridging day.


The 1st May falls on a Monday in 2023, for example. So a long weekend is guaranteed here. The Day of German unity October 3 falls on a Tuesday this year. If the boss gives the green light, you can set a bridging day and have an even longer weekend.

Jewish holidays in 2023

  • Passover: April 5th (after sunset) to April 13th (at nightfall).
  • Rosh Hashanah: September 15 (after sunset) to September 17 (at nightfall)
  • Yom Kipur: September 24 (after sunset) to September 25 (at nightfall)
  • Hanukkah: December 7th (after sunset) to December 15th (at nightfall)

Passover is the most important Jewish family festival of the year, when Jews celebrate the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Rosh ha-Shana is the Jewish New Year’s Day. Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement and is considered the highest Jewish holiday. Hanukkah is the festival of lights.

Every Jewish holiday begins on the evening before and ends at sunset. Hence the annotations “after sunset” and “at nightfall”.

Islamic Holidays and Festivals in 2023

  • 1st Ramadan: March 23rd
  • Breaking the Fast (Sugar Feast): April 21-23
  • Feast of the Sacrifice: June 28th to June 30th
  • Islamic New Year (1444 AH): July 19th

Ramadan is the month of fasting for devout Muslims. For 29 days, they only eat and drink after sunset and before sunrise. This is followed by the breaking of the fast or sugar festival for two days. The Festival of Sacrifice is the highest Islamic festival.

The New year welcome Muslima and Muslims 2023 on July 19th. The islamic calendar calculates “after Hijra” (nH), which indicates the time of the emigration of the Prophet Mohammed from Mecca to Medina.

How many vacation days am I entitled to per year?

All employees are entitled to at least 24 working days of statutory vacation per year. Working days are all calendar days that are not Sundays or public holidays. To be fully entitled, the person must have been employed by the company for at least six months.

Does the employer have to approve my vacation request?

The employer must always take into account the wishes of the employees when determining the time of vacation. Exception: if there are urgent business concerns or holiday requests from other employees who deserve priority from a social point of view, speak against it.

Can I take remaining vacation days with me into the new year?

The Federal Holidays Act states: “A transfer of vacation to the next calendar year is only permitted if there are urgent operational reasons or reasons relating to the employee’s personality.” In this case, vacation must be taken by March 31.

What if I get sick while on vacation?

The vacation days not used for recreation due to illness are not deducted from the annual quota. However, the employee needs a medical certificate for this.

Am I entitled to additional educational leave?

In NRW, employees have a legal right to five days of paid educational leave if they have already worked for a company for six months. The application for this must be submitted at least six weeks before the start and the recognized educational event must be communicated.
