Since a couple of weeks ago, Folkuniversitet in Uppsala has been rapidly training healthcare staff from Ukraine in Swedish, in order to be employed. These include doctors, dentists, midwives and nurses. Through intensive training in Swedish, the goal is to reach the National Board of Health and Welfare’s language level.

One of the 80 or so students attending the training is Inna Tyts. She has 22 years of experience working as a nurse in Ukraine.

– I want to work, pay taxes and be able to contribute to society. Swedish is a tough language, but in August I hope to know enough to get a job, says Inna Tyts.

The educational project is part of Folkuniversitetet – with financial support from the European Social Fund. The teacher for the group is Karin Ciszuk, who is impressed by the Ukrainian refugees’ ability to learn.

– This particular group stands out. They have regular Swedish lessons during the day and in the afternoon they focus on the Swedish language in healthcare, she says.
