Put it in the freezer and the food will last longer. Be careful, some products should not be frozen. We say which.

It is a popular remedy in many households: simply throw away food that is in danger of going bad freezer put. But beware, some are not suitable for this at all. We list products that you definitely shouldn’t do this with.

You should never freeze these foods

  • eggs: The shell of raw eggs can crack. Eggs that are already cooked become rubbery.
  • Cheese: The cream cheese is not suitable for freezing. It flakes after thawing. Soft cheese becomes mushy. Hard cheese can be frozen (e.g. raclette), but it loses its taste. Once thawed, it tends to become crumbly, so the cheese is only suitable for cooking or gratinating.

  • Food containing gelatine: These include, for example, pudding, cakes and other desserts. When thawing, the products lose their bond, so that the cream becomes liquid.
  • Potatoes: After thawing, they no longer have their consistency. They are mushy. In addition: The taste changes, the potatoes suddenly taste strangely sweet.
  • Garlic: Aroma and taste are lost. Just use fresh.


  • Other dairy products: Yoghurt, cream, sour cream, quark or whole milk usually have a high fat content. The same problem arises as with cream cheese: the products flake when thawed and acquire a gritty composition.
  • Salads: Whether lettuce, oak leaf or iceberg lettuce – they all have a high water content, are mushy after the thawing process and can no longer be enjoyed. The same applies here: freshly prepared and consumed.
  • Water-rich fruits & vegetables: These include, for example, many berries, cucumbers, melons, radishes, tropical fruits or grapes. After thawing, they behave like the potatoes already mentioned: they become mushy and therefore unusable.
