Diana Hernández Álvarez, daughter of the elderly Migdalia Hernández Álvarez, who escaped in May from the Havana Psychiatric Hospital “Comandante Doctor Eduardo Bernabé Ordaz Ducungué” (Mazorra), expressed her anguish and frustration at the lack of answers and support from the authorities in the search for her mother.

Hernández Álvarez, in his desperate search for more than 64 days, has tirelessly traveled throughout the capital in search of his beloved mother.

However, his effort has been marred by the lack of help and mistreatment received in the institutions he has visited to obtain information on Migdalia’s whereabouts.

“I am desperate because my mother has not just appeared. I have gone to all the institutions that exist and may exist, but practically everyone mistreats me,” Hernández Álvarez told CubaNet.

The 76-year-old woman, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, disappeared on Wednesday, May 17, after escaping from the hospital where she had been hospitalized for more than 50 years.

His family wonders how the escape was possible and why preventive measures were not taken to prevent it.

The pain and concern of the relatives are evident, while they have turned to the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) and the Population Assistance Offices of the Council of State for help, but they continue without clear answers about the whereabouts of the women.

Diana’s testimony also highlights the lack of resources and adequate support in mental health centers in Cuba, which can put the safety of patients at risk and increase the anguish of their families.

Migdalia’s family continues to demand answers and concrete actions from the authorities of the Havana Psychiatric Hospital to find their loved one and guarantee their well-being.
