It is official: The Netflix series One Piece has been renewed for a second season And so the Straw Hat Pirates will soon be able to set off on new adventures as part of the live-action film. And anyone who knows the template, of course, already knows what new dangers lurk on the horizon.

Above all, of course, is the Alabasta Arc, the fight against the Baroque company and its leader Sir Crocodile. And if a persistent theory is to be believed, we already saw the big villain of Season 2 in the very first episode of One Piece.

Is Sir Crocodile already hiding in episode 1?

Who exactly is it about? Sir Crocodile is one of Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates’ fiercest opponents, appearing for the first time in Chapter 126 of the manga. As the leader of the Baroque Company, he tries to subjugate all of humanity using the ancient weapon Pluton, plunging the desert state of Alabasta into civil war.

Crocodile is, or was, a member of the Seven Samurai of the Sea (more on that with our colleagues at GamePro), has the powers of the Sand Devil Fruit and his bounty was once 81,000,000 Berry. If we make it to Alabasta in season 2 of the Netflix series, Sir Crocodile should of course play a key role.

Where has Crocodile (perhaps) been seen? The opening scene of One Piece takes place a few years in the past and viewers witness the execution of the pirate king Gol D. Roger. A few characters can already be seen who play a key role later in One Piece. For example the Red Shanks, Dracule Mihawk or Smoker.

Also noticeable is a young woman with black hair and gold necklaces, who the community is sure: She could be Sir Crocodile. But how does that fit together? For this we have to resort to a well-known fan theory.

Sir Crocodile was (perhaps) once a woman

What’s behind the fan theory about Crocodile? Fans of the manga and anime have long suspected that one of Luffy’s toughest opponents was once a woman. One of the decisive factors for this is a statement from Emporio Ivankov, who describes Crocodile with one scandalous secret keeps in check.

Ivankov himself has eaten the hormone devil fruit and can use it to change not only his own gender, but also that of other people. This makes fans suspect that Ivankov may have changed Crocodile from a woman to a man.

Eiichiro Oda also drew Crocodile as a child (you can find the sketch with this link) and the later villain has a more androgynous look. Based on this, some fans even go so far as to suggest that Crocodile could even be Luffy’s mother, but that’s a completely separate theory in itself.

Crocodile wouldn’t be One Piece’s first trans character: Eiichiro Oda has long since introduced additional characters in the manga who identify with the gender assigned to them at birth. So in chapter 913 the young woman entered Kiku on, in chapter 971 then followed Yamato. In the latter case, many fans would have wanted him to join Luffy’s crew, but Oda has not yet done so.

But not a member of the Straw Hat Pirates: Yamato actually seemed predestined to join Luffy's crew. Image source: Toei Animation
