In the area of the Klostertal, specifically in the municipality of Klösterle, there are parts of the Verwall Natura 2000 area, the largest contiguous protected area in Vorarlberg.

In addition, with the Klostertal mountain forests, there is a second such protected area entirely in the Klostertal. Alongside the Verwall, it is one of the most important of its kind in Vorarlberg. 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of being under protection, which is why the Museumsverein Klostertal wants to focus on the two areas in an exhibition and thus contribute to raising awareness of this topic in the region. This is also intended to mark the tenth anniversary of the Verwall – Klostertal mountain forests nature conservation association.

Natura 2000 is a Europe-wide network of protected areas. These aim to permanently preserve special species and habitats. The natural natural habitats of Europe should be permanently secured by being placed under protection. The bird protection directive and the fauna-flora-habitat directive, also known as the FFH directive, have been adopted as the legal basis for this within the European Union.

The two areas of Verwall and Klostertal mountain forests are presented in the exhibition. The special features and protected goods are the focus. Large-format panels invite you to experience the landscape of the Klostertal, as was the case in last year’s “Alpine Water World” exhibition.

The exhibition “Natura 2000: European protected areas in the Klostertal”. on Friday, May 12, 2023 at 7 p.m opened in the Klostertal Museum. For the sustenance is provided.

The excursion about the (bird) diversity of the Klostertal mountain forests takes place on Saturday May 13 at 2 p.m The meeting point is at the train station in Langen am Arlberg. Biologist Johanna Kronberger and area manager Christian Kuehs guide us through the habitat and biodiversity of the Klostertal mountain forests. We find out what the toes of woodpeckers, Italian champions and fake mice are all about between forest, meadow and ravine from Langen am Arlberg to Klösterle. Bring sturdy shoes, weather protection, binoculars and hiking poles if necessary.
