The US and its allies are apparently not the only ones worried about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While several countries had previously taken less aggressive or strategically ambivalent positions, this trend appears to be changing.

According to a survey by polling institute Gallup For the first time in the institute’s history, the majority of the world’s population spoke out against the Russian leadership.

In 2022, majorities in 81 out of 137 countries, a record 57 percent, condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That’s a dramatic increase from 38 percent in 2021 and by far the highest since polls began in 2007.

The proportion of those who have no opinion on Russia’s leadership has also fallen steadily over the years and has now fallen to a new low of 18 percent.

High-income, Western-leaning democracies tended to have the highest opposition rates, according to the survey, with scores exceeding 90 percent in the US, Canada (91 percent) and 10 European countries — including Poland, one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies in Europe, where 95 percent oppose it pronounce the Russian invasion. In Ukraine itself, the rejection rate was 96 percent. (tsp)
