Nearly 1,500 guns were repurchased by the city in an event aimed at reducing violent crime in Houston.

On Saturday, the parking lot of NRG Park was the location for the collection of weapons by the Houston police department that included revolvers, pistols, rifles and even shotguns.

All the weapons were received voluntarily by the police, who assured that it is one of the ways to reduce the number of weapons found on the streets of Houston.

The first thousand weapons were collected in just one hour, and all this after an extremely violent night in the city.

According to the Houston Police Department, the collected weapons will be processed and then destroyed.

Last year, 790 weapons were collected, but this year the number rose to 1,446. Residents received gift cards for each gun turned in, ranging from $50 to $200.
