NEW YORK — A swimmer went missing in the waters off Coney Island Thursday afternoon, police said.

Divers dove into the Atlantic Ocean looking for two missing swimmers, possibly children, around 12:45 p.m. One was eventually rescued, while the other remains missing while an active search is underway for him, police said.

Moments before the swimmers disappeared into the water, Kevin, a swimmer, told our sister network News 4 New York that he was in chest-deep water with them.

Witness after witness told News 4 New York the same thing: They saw the children and told them that if they weren’t good swimmers, they needed to head for shore.

However, people on the beach began to hear screaming and realized that the swimmers were in trouble. Beachgoers ran into the waves to try to help the struggling swimmers.

A witness said when police and parks security arrived, he saw a person being pulled out of the water and rushed to the emergency stretcher.

As the search for the other person continues, viewers were excited. A woman under a green umbrella was distraught. Witnesses say she is related to the two swimmers
